The town itself came about originally back in 1932 when construction on the Moffat Tunnel started up, which allowed easier and more profitable access across the Continental Divide to Denver, Cheyenne and Pueblo. Winter Park annexes several towns in the area over time, and became an incorporated town in 1978, becoming the highest incorporated town in the United States.
With a name like Winter Park, you've got to expect snow sports, but there's a lot to do in the summer as well. Take a ski lift up to the top of a mountain and hike down, or take your mountain bikes up into the hundreds of trails in the area. For the history buffs, you've got hot spots like the Cozens' Ranch House Museum just north of town, the site of a stage stop and post office from the 1870s. Once you've got the munchies, and you want break from the hashpitality, with hearty German, spicy Cajun or Mexican restaurants, and plenty of shops to replenish half-mind needs.
When you come to Winter Park, you're going to get high, cheap and legal. Depending on where the trails run, you'll be between 9,100 and 12,000 feet up in the mountains, so be sure to check out the TTT's tips on the Altitude sickness. But the beauty of it is you're on the edge of two major natural areas, Rocky Mountain National Park and Arapahoe National Forest.
